Let's get the red herring out of the way immediately. E-commerce (shopping online) does not have to be expensive, though it can be. To have e-commerce so that people can shop online for clothes, computers, tickets, tuition or whatever, you typically need 4 things:

  1. a web site
  2. a shopping cart
  3. a payment processor
  4. somebody to make the lot work, which is us - Electric Ink.

The web site, which is typically where it all happens, we design. The shopping cart is the thing that does all of the arithmetic, and we implement it. The payment processor takes the money online and puts it into your account - we integrate it. For a client with few things to sell we could design a fully functional very professional web site for as little as £500 (and yes we can design them for 20+ times that). Shopping  carts vary from free to hundreds of pounds. Payment Processors (Banks/PayPal/WorldPay etc) vary from being almost free to a considerable sum, the old axiom "you pays your money" is typical, though it has to be said that the virtually free ones are often fine for a small business.

Thus, for a small business, it would be possible to get into e-commerce, on a professional basis, for under £500 as a set up, and under £100 per year for maintenance of the site, with transaction fees that were dependent on what you were selling (the Payment Processor may work on a percentage rather than flat fee). And yes, we can do (and have done) very big sites costing much much more.
